I am Robby Hume – West Point cadet, civil engineer-in-training, and voracious reader. This website is a smattering of my thoughts – a sort of Pensieve (to borrow from J.K. Rowling) filled with stories, ideas, and inventions that intrigue me in some way. These short articles are the bits of my mind that I want to share with the world – cataloged here for years to come. And much of what I think about, to explain the origin for this site’s title, is inspired by the books I read. Like the inquisitive rook working to solve a puzzle in search of a scrap of food, I dive into books in pursuit of the knowledge within.
He had read much, if one considers his long life; but his contemplation was much more than his reading. He was wont to say that if he had read as much as other men he should have known no more than other men.
One of the old masters of science fiction states it beautifully. Reading is not merely about consuming one title after another, but rather contemplating it – reflecting on its message and attempting to apply and connect it to a broader philosophy. I will attempt to live up to Dr. Asimov’s lofty words in my writing for this website.
Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.
-Neil Gaiman, Coraline
In the end, Neil Gaiman describes my goal eerily well. I am an avid reader of science-fiction and fantasy, genres considered by many to be nothing more than a childish escape from reality. I endeavor to identify the role that literature continues to play in modern society. I will get side-tracked along the way, but I will do my best to present a compelling case.
